The budget passed by the North Carolina General Assembly last summer eliminated state funding for driver education after June 30, 2015. NCPTA thinks this is an important issue, and the NCPTA Board of Directors adopted a position to support efforts to ask the North Carolina General Assembly to include funding for driver education in the upcoming long session. We encourage local PTAs throughout North Carolina to support our efforts to provide state funding for driver education.

If you are interested in contacting your state legislators, you can find their contact information by visiting the North Carolina General Assembly website.

The Driver Education Matters website is a great resource for information on driver education and funding for driver education in North Carolina. NCPTA Board of Directors Position on Implementation of the
New 10-Point Grading Scale

external image pngThe North Carolina PTA Board of Directors voted to support an across-the-board full transition to the new 10-point grading scale to begin for high school students in the 2015-2016 school year instead of using a phased-in long-term transition in which freshmen would be graded on a different scale than tenth through twelfth graders.

The NCPTA Board of Directors took this position after hearing from several parents and superintendents who were concerned with the proposed phased-in approach and its potentially negative impact on students and teachers.

SOAR e-News Update – November 18, 2014
The 1st quarter awards ceremony has been canceled.
PTSA General Meeting scheduled for 11/20 has been canceled.

teacup.pngCoffee & Tea with Principal Terra M. Kennedy….. will be held in Conference room 103 on Monday, November 24, 2014 from 6:30am until 7:45am. This is an opportunity to get to know the principal and for parents to share their thoughts on the current state of Phillip O Berry.

The North Carolina Board of Education recently approved a change to create a new 10-point grading scale for students who begin ninth grade in fall of 2015. This system will replace the current 7-point grading scale.

For 2015-2016 ninth graders, the following High School Grade Scale will apply:
  • 90-100 = 4.0
  • 80-89 = 3.0
  • 70-79 = 2.0
  • 60-69 = 1.0
  • less than 59 = 0
Since the State Board's approval last month of this new 10-point scale, NCPTA has heard from several parents who are concerned with the timing of the implementation of the new grading system, especially for students in tenth through twelfth grade. The Central Carolina Regional Educational Service Alliance (CCRESA) has also expressed concerns to State Board of Education members. CCRESA's recent letter to State Board of Education members stated that while it supported the move to replace the current 7-point grading scale with a 10-point scale, the organization was concerned with the process that the State Board has approved for transitioning from the 7-point scale to the 10-point scale.

One main concern is that the new 10-point scale will be used to assign grades for classroom assessments to entering freshmen in 2015-2016 but all other students will be graded using the current 7-point scale. Full implementation of the new grading system is not scheduled to take place until 2018-2019.
Part of the problem, according to CCRESA, will be the complicated logistics for teachers who will have students in their class graded using two different scales. CCRESA also expressed the concern that until full implementation of the 10-point grading system, a freshman and a non-freshman could receive the same numerical grade on an assignment (e.g. a 91) and the freshman would receive an A and the non-freshman would receive a B.
CCRESA has proposed that the State Board of Education consider changing the current plan of implementation to a plan that would implement the 10-point grading scale across-the-board for all students in 2015-2016.
If you also have similar concerns with the implementation timing of the new 10-point grading scale adopted by the State Board of Education, you can find contact information for the State Board of Education members by clicking here.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!!!! from 2:30pm to 4pm in Room 522 to supervise student activities. Must be registered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a volunteer.**Click here** to complete the form and have a background check conducted for clearance to work in the classroom with students. MOST AMAZING VOLUNTEERMs. Elizabeth (aka Mama Ardrey) is the hardest working PTSA volunteer. She is the mother of LaDonna Ardrey, VP for Parent Involvement on the POB PTSA and she is the epitome of parent involvement. She supports POB as a grandparent (her granddaughter plays in the band) but also as the parent of a PTSA Executive Board member. Ms. Elizabeth moves faster than most of us out in the carpool line when distributing information and she can also "get jiggy with it" as we saw at the recent tailgate celebration. Hats off to Ms. Elizabeth for being an amazing volunteer and a joy to work with!!!.

DID YOU MISS THE GREAT CELEBRATION?? The Berry TAILGATE held Oct. 17th was loads of fun. This gathering which started out as a party planned to recognize and promote parent involvement transformed into a community event with food, games, and great music. Several community leaders and principals from surrounding schools attended as we honored students from all over our Learning Community for Academic Excellence and Outstanding Character.

INVEST IN OUR CHILDREN & WIN A GIFT CARD...It's not too late for your child to win a gift card as part of our annual Invest in Your Child fundraising campaign. There will be two more drawings in January and February, respectively. All you have to do is donate at least $25 (family) or $5 (student) to be entered. It's that easy. If you've already donated to the campaign, then you will automatically be entered for the next two drawings. You can donate online and your name will be displayed in our list of donors under the DONATE page on our website. Good luck!

NEW SCHOOL STORE HOURS...We thank the students, staff and parents who have patronized the school store. As you know, 100% of the profit from the school store goes back to POB to support programs and activities approved by the PTSA membership in its annual budget. We had hoped to operate the school store 5 days a week, but due to a lack in parent volunteers the school store will be open on Monday, Wednesday & Friday only during its regular time from 2:15 to 2:45 pm. On weeks when testing is taking place or other activities that call for school to be dismissed early, the school store will not open. If you are available to commit 1.5 hours to work the school store, please contact Kim Loring, School Store Manager at kt.loring@gmail.com. Thanks in advance.

DEBATE TEAM CAMP TO RAISE FUNDS...The POB Debate Club will host a camp for all novice debaters from around the region on Saturday, February 15 at Phillip O. Berry Academy. Students can pay $10 to attend the camp to be critiqued by experienced judges and debaters. They can stay for a competition round in the afternoon for an additional $5. Breakfast and lunch is being provided for judges and volunteers. Students will be able to purchase a low cost breakfast and lunch. If you are able to volunteer for the Debate Camp or would like to donate money or food resources, please contact Ms. Gina Vergata, gina1.vergata@cms.k12.nc.us or Ms. Sonya Gilbert, gilteam2@cs.com.

MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES...If you haven't joined the POB PTSA, this is the perfect time to do so. Why? Because by joining you will be helping your student's class to win a pizza party. That's right. A membership competition is underway and the class in each grade that has the most parents join during the membership drive will get a pizza party. Forms went home last week with students. If you didn't get the form, you can still join and pay online. Just go to the "Join the PTSA" tab on this site. Make sure you add your student to the membership so we will know which class to credit. Good luck and may the best classes win!!!

SOAR e-News Updates - December 11, 2013
The holidays are just around the corner. It's a time to celebrate family and friends with food, fun and fellowship. And, there's no better time to thank those who play an important role in preparing our children for the future - the faculty and staff at Phillip O. Berry Academy. Just think, when our children are away from us throughout the day, they are in the care and protection of the very capable staff at POB. We want to thank the people who make investments in our children by providing a fantastic Holiday Brunch for them on Thursday, December 19th from 10 am to 2 pm. If you cook then please prepare a dish; if you are skilled at purchasing food items - then please purchase something to donate or if you're just good at greeting and making people feel appreciated - sign up to serve. Whatever your gift please share it with the faculty and staff on Thursday, December 19th. To sign up to donate an item or volunteer **click here**. Remember we have to feed 150 people. Thanks in advance for blessing the faculty and staff at POB this holiday season.

GIVE A STAFF MEMBER A GIFT...I know it's been a while since our children were in elementary school. Back then we were all too happy to give our children's teachers a gift card or box of candy or some other token of appreciation during the holiday season. Well, we're asking you to consider doing that now. No matter how large or small the gesture, it's the thought that counts. The job of an educator is not an easy one. Please consider giving a gift to your child's teacher(s), bus drivers, coach or other education related personnel this holiday season. I guarantee it will be greatly appreciated.

INVEST IN OUR CHILDREN...To recognize individuals who contribute to the "Invest In Your Child" campaign, we are going to have three drawings (one in December, January & February) for gift cards. All students who have contributed at least $5 or families that have contributed at least $25 will be entered into a monthly drawing. The winning student/family will receive a $75 Visa gift card on December 20th, $50 gift card on January 31st, and $25 gift card on February 21st. Hopefully, everyone will get their donations in early so your child’s name will be in the drawing all three times. Make your contribution today to improve educational outcomes at Phillip O. Berry. Thank you.

1st QUARTER ACADEMY AWARDS! Congratulations to the students who were honored during our 1st Quarter Academy Awards. We all had a wonderful time celebrating the accomplishments of our students and jamming to the POB Jazz Combo Band under the direction of Mr. Walter Suggs. Mr. T, other school administrators, staff and volunteers executed an well-planned and concise ceremony. Amazingly, we were in and out within 1 hour (and managed to cover PTSA business in between.) Well done!!!

The POB PTSA opened the Cardinal’s Nest School Store this week. The store is located in the PTSA office, Rm. 144. In accordance with CMS Board of Education Policy JL governing Student Wellness, the Cardinal’s Nest will not sell snacks or carbonated beverages to students during times that conflict with sales from the Cafeteria. However, adults may purchase snacks & beverages before school and students may purchase them after the last lunch along with novelty items (pens, pencils, notebooks, gifts, etc) and apparel. All proceeds from sales in the Cardinal’s Nest directly support learning and activities at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology.

The first of a series of Open Houses will be hosted tomorrow, November 8th from 7:30 am to 8:45 am. Please demonstrate your Berry Pride and help our school put its best foot forward for families and students who are considering Berry for their high quality high school education.

Interested in working this summer? Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont opened enrollment for its Career Learning Academy for Youth (CLAY) Program this week. What’s the matter with the carpool line? Odd question to ask, but there must be a problem with the carpool line if so many students are being dropped off on Alleghany Street every morning. Well actually the carpool line isn’t all that bad when you compare it to other high schools in the District. If you don’t like the speed bumps in the main carpool line, there is a perfectly good alternate carpool line on the other side of the school. Whichever you decide to use, please please please help us keep your student safe by NOT dropping or picking them up on Alleghany Street in the morning or afternoon. This is a truly unsafe practice and could put our children and other drivers in jeopardy. Thank you for helping make Berry a safer environment.

And the winner is...Phillip O. Berry Academy Awards Ceremony is just around the corner. Are you ready to celebrate the accomplishments of our amazing students. The 1st quarter awards ceremony will be hosted on Thursday, November 21st. Come out and enjoy popcorn and beverages with the rest of our Berry Family as we cheer and shout about all the good things that our students have accomplished in the 1st quarter. It's hard to believe that we're 25% of the way through the school year already. If you would like to volunteer to make this ceremony a success, please contact Kimberly Weaver, PTSA Special Projects Chair at kimberlyeweaver@aol.com.
